South Street School students displayed the joy of the holiday season through educational activities and by helping others.
After studying holidays around the world, second grade students participated in holiday centers in which they made an ornament, played holiday Bingo and learned how to spin the dreidel. They even made reindeer food after reading Vivian Walsh’s “Olive the Other Reindeer.”
Kindergarten students finished a comprehensive gingerbread man unit. They collectively read and studied five books on the topic, compared the stories and sequenced them in their writing journals. Parents also got involved in this study by writing notes to the class about where they saw the gingerbread man. Students them tracked the fictional character on a map of the United States and the world.
There was also much generosity among the school community. The kindergarten students, under the direction of teacher Claudia Marino, organized a coat drive and collected more than 100 coats. They also ran a food drive for community families in need. The PTA and the community also donated toiletries and household items for Blessing Boxes. Additionally, Vicki Senecal’s South Street Shines Club held a glove and hat collection for Holly’s Hats and Robby’s Gloves.
