Jr.-Sr. High School science research students collected data on two important proteins during a March 8 trip to Brookhaven National Laboratory. The students’ work is supported by the BNL SPARK program and the New York Structural Biology Center in collaboration with the University of Kansas.
These proteins, Beta lactamase and dihydroorotase, are high priority targets in the battle against bacterial antibiotic resistance. The students used x-ray diffraction to determine the 3D structure of these proteins with the goal of publishing the structures in the protein database.
